We use the power of athletics to teach lessons that last a lifetime teamwork, discipline, resilience, and confidence. Through these experiences, we help foster youth discover their purpose and build a foundation for success, whether that means pursuing higher education, learning a trade, or finding their own unique path in life. We don’t just build athletes we build strong, confident individuals ready to shape their future and rise above every challenge.

My name is Anjelica Hidalgo, and I am the founder of Rise Above Athletics Foundation. Growing up in the foster care system, I experienced firsthand the instability and challenges that come with moving from home to home. One of the greatest opportunities I missed during that time was the chance to participate in organized sports a loss that later became the driving force behind my mission. Sports taught me the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance skills that helped me overcome adversity and reach goals I once thought were out of reach. I founded Rise Above Athletics Foundation to ensure that foster youth today have the opportunities I didn’t: access to sports, mentorship, and supportive environments that help them grow, discover their purpose, and build a foundation for lifelong success. Whether their path leads to college, a trade, or another meaningful direction, my goal is to help them rise above their circumstances and believe in what’s possible for their future.

Before discovering basketball, I struggled to stay motivated in school and keep my grades up. The game gave me structure, purpose, and a goal to work toward. Through dedication and discipline, I went from struggling academically to receiving multiple offers to play basketball at colleges across the country.

Through dedication and discipline, I went from struggling academically to receiving multiple offers to play basketball at colleges across the country.
Although I chose not to play at the collegiate level, I know I wouldn’t have made it to college without basketball. Now, as a Sports Business major, my mission is to help the next generation of foster youth find their purpose through sports and empower them to overcome their circumstances to achieve success.
